What Makes English Sparkling Rosé Pink?

This is one of the questions we're asked at tastings
🌸"How does sparkling rosé get its pink colour?"
Many people assume it's made by mixing red and white wine together. While that can happen in some parts of the wine world, it's not how quality English sparkling rosé is typically produced.
🌸It All Starts with the Grapes
The juice inside almost every grape, whether red or white, is actually clear. The colour comes from the grape skins. Red grape varieties such as Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir contain natural pigments in their skins, and it's these pigments that create the beautiful shades of pink found in sparkling rosé.
🌸A Delicate Balance
To create rosé, winemakers allow the clear grape juice to remain in contact with the skins for a carefully controlled period. This process, known as skin contact, may last anywhere from a few hours to around a day, depending on the style the winemaker wants to achieve. The longer the skins remain with the juice, the deeper the colour becomes. For elegant sparkling rosés, the aim is usually a delicate salmon or pale pink hue rather than a deep ruby colour.
🌸More Than Just Colour
Those grape skins don't just provide colour, they also contribute subtle aromas and flavours. Depending on the grape variety and growing season, you may notice notes of wild strawberries, raspberries, cherries or redcurrants alongside the fresh citrus character that English sparkling wine is known for.
🌸Why English Sparkling Rosé Stands Out
England's cool climate helps grapes retain their natural acidity, giving sparkling rosé its bright, refreshing character. At Dancing Duchess, our Sparkling Rosé is made from 100% Pinot Meunier, producing delicate berry fruit, crisp freshness and fine, persistent bubbles that make it equally enjoyable as an aperitif or with food.
🌸The Perfect Shade of Summer
Whether you're enjoying a glass in the garden, celebrating with friends or raising a toast to a special occasion, the beautiful blush colour of English sparkling rosé is more than just eye-catching, it's the result of careful craftsmanship from vineyard to bottle.
🌸The next time someone asks why sparkling rosé is pink, you'll know it's all thanks to the grape skins, careful timing and a little bit of winemaking magic!
